Events held by Karaganda Medical University as part of World Antibiotic Awareness Week

Each year, the World Health Organization holds World Antibiotic Awareness Week from November 16 to 22. This global campaign designed to raise awareness about global challenge of antimicrobial resistance and to promote prudent use of antimicrobial medicinal products. During this time period, Karaganda Medical University hosted a series of scientific, educational, and awareness building events. Employees of the Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Evidence-Based Medicine actively contributed by delivering scientific presentations, conducting training workshops, and meeting with students.

The Head of the Chair, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Professor Sholpan Sabatayevna Kaliyeva, WHO Technical Advisory Group expert on AWaRe and Vice-President of the Association of Clinical Pharmacologists and Pharmacists of the Republic of Kazakhstan was a moderator on November 20, 2025 at the international conference on “Advancing Research and Policy on Resistance to Antimicrobial Medicinal Products for Healthcare System Resilience,” held at the School of Medicine of Nazarbayev University. At the section on “Contribution of Young Researchers to Scientific Development in AMR,” a presentation was delivered by Yuliya Yuryevna Bikbatyrova, master’s degree student at the department.



Sh.S. Kaliyeva also delivered a presentation at the VI International Scientific and Practical Conference on “Current Issues of Pharmacology: Fr om Drug Design to Their Rational Use” and at the VII Central Asian Congress “Current State and Prospects for the Development of Clinical Pharmacology,” which were held on November 20–21, 2025 at Bukhara State Medical Institute.

N.A. Simokhina delivered a presentation at the Scientific and Practical Conference with international participation “Effective Antibiotic Management: From Research to Implementation,” organized by the Department of Healthcare of Aktobe region, the Department of Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacology of the West Kazakhstan Medical University named after Marat Ospanov, and the Professional Association of Clinical Pharmacologists and Pharmacists.

Within the week, staff of the department conducted training sessions for medical professionals. A meeting for professionals of the National Center for Occupational Hygiene and Occupational Health and the Student Clinic was held by Nailya Kamashevna Dyusembayeva, Associate Professor at the department, Doctor of Medical Sciences. The discussion addressed compliance with the clinical protocols of the Ministry of Healthcare of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the importance of microbiological monitoring, control of dosages and duration of antimicrobial therapy, infection control measures, and the importance of cross-sectoral collaboration in preventing microbial resistance.

On November 19, a training session was held at the University Clinic, wh ere S.S. Sharayeva, a medical resident, presented key information to colleagues on the mechanisms of the development of antibiotic resistance, WHO data, and current recommendations on the rational use of antimicrobial drugs.

Assistant Professor T.K. Sagadatova conducted a workshop with the staff of the Regional Children’s Clinical Hospital, wh ere issues of the rational use of antimicrobial drugs, following clinical protocols, and the importance to improve the quality of infection control were also discussed.

In addition, staff of the department L.I. Piven, T.V. Kim, T.L. Nikolayeva, Zh.V. Syzdikova, O.Zh. Sabekova, N.A. Simokhina, Yu.Yu. Bikbatyrova, R.E. Akhmediya, Zh.B. Ayat, T.K. Sagadatova, M.T. Tussenova, and Ch.Z. Salibekova conducted informational sessions with students focused on raising awareness on the issue of antibiotic resistance and the importance of responsible use of antimicrobial drugs. Students in “Medicine,” “General Medicine,” “Pediatrics,” “Pharmacy,” as well as students from the international faculty, participated in these discussions.
