Dialogue between Cultures in Medical Education: Unity Through Traditions

On the eve of the celebration of the Kazakhstan People's Unity Day, a significant cultural and educational event was held at the Department of History of Kazakhstan and Social-Political Disciplines, bringing together students fr om different countries and nationalities. The event, titled “Dialogue between Cultures in Medical Education: Unity Through Traditions,” served as a platform for intercultural dialogue, exchange of experience, and strengthening friendly relations.The event was attended by faculty members of the department—Assistant Professor D.E. Jakupova, Associate Professor B.S. Bitenova, students of the 2027 group, as well as students of the International Medical Faculty fr om groups 2008 and 2018. Such number composition of participants created a unique atmosphere of open communication, wh ere everyone had the opportunity not only to relate about own culture but also to better understand of the traditions and values of other nations.
Today, cultural competency has become increasingly important for future doctors, particularly their ability to take into account the national and social characteristics of patients. Events like this play a crucial role in developing these qualities.
The main part of the program was dedicated to the presentations of students. Representatives fr om the group with the Kazakh language instruction introduced guests to the traditions of the Kazakh people, spoke about the pecualirities of national cuisine, family traditions, celebrations and historical roots of cultural practices. Elements of hospitality, which hold a valuable place in Kazakh culture, were demonstrated alongside various customs and traditions.
In turn, students from India delivered a vivid and informative presentation showcasing the richness of their culture. They spoke about national traditions, religious characteristics, variety of cuisine, and cultural practices. Particular emphasis was placed on the role of traditional medicine, including Ayurveda, and its influence on modern approaches to health and treatment.
This form of interaction not only broadened the participants’ perspectives but also fostered respect toward cultural diversity.
The event concluded with informal socializing, during which students continued to explore each other’s cultures while tasting national dishes. Certificates were awarded to the speakers and the most active students.
As a result, the event became a striking example of how the educational environment can contribute to the development of intercultural dialogue. In today’s world, wh ere medicine is becoming increasingly global, such initiatives play an important role in training professionals capable of working effectively in multinational and multicultural environments.
